Tanabata (七夕, literally “evening of the 7th” )

In some regions the Star Festival is based on the Gregorian calendar and thus held on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year. Tanabata celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime (織女星, Vega) and Hikoboshi (彦星, Altair). These lovers, separated by the Milky Way, are allowed to meet on only this day. As soon as the stars come out the celebrations begin.

People write their wishes on a piece of paper and hang it on decorated bamboo shoots. Those are often set afloat on a river or burned after the festival. Many outdoor stalls add to the festive atmosphere by selling food and providing carnival games.
